Injury Prevention Techniques for Common Workout Mistakes

At Sussex Performance Centre, we believe that training should make you stronger—not sideline you with injuries. Yet many gym-goers unknowingly put themselves at risk of injury by repeating a few common mistakes in their workouts.

In this blog, we’ll break down the top training errors we see regularly, and provide evidence-backed tips to prevent them—so you can train harder, for longer, without setbacks.


1. Poor Lifting Technique

One of the leading causes of gym injuries is improper form—especially during compound movements like squats, deadlifts, and presses.

The problem: Rounding the back in a deadlift, knees collapsing inward on squats, or flaring elbows too wide on bench presses can all lead to joint stress and long-term damage.

Prevention tip:

  • Learn the movement with bodyweight or a dowel first.

  • Film your form or work with a coach to assess movement patterns.

  • Prioritize technique over load.

2. Skipping a Proper Warm-Up

Jumping straight into heavy lifting or high-intensity cardio without warming up increases your risk of strains, tears, and decreased performance.

The problem: Cold muscles are less pliable and more prone to injury. Inadequate warm-ups also impair neuromuscular activation.

  • Include 5–10 minutes of light cardio (e.g., rowing, cycling).

  • Use dynamic stretching and activation drills for key muscle groups.

The problem: Overtraining can lead to chronic joint pain, tendonitis, and even nervous system burnout.

  • Schedule at least one full rest day per week.

  • Prioritize sleep, hydration, and balanced nutrition.

  • Use recovery tools like foam rollers, mobility work, and walking.

4. Neglecting Mobility and Stability Work

Limited range of motion or poor joint control can force your body to compensate in unsafe ways during exercise.

The problem: A tight hip flexor, stiff thoracic spine, or unstable shoulder can all compromise movement quality.

Prevention tip:

  • Integrate mobility drills into your warm-ups and cooldowns.

  • Use tools like resistance bands and foam rollers regularly.

  • Address weak links—especially the core, glutes, and scapular stabilizers.

5. Ego Lifting – Choosing Weight Over Control

Lifting weights that are too heavy just to impress others often leads to breakdown in form and puts joints and muscles at risk.

The problem: Training should challenge the body, not compromise it.

Prevention tip:

  • Use the RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) or reps in reserve (RIR) scale to guide intensity.

  • Track your progress and focus on progressive overload, not “maxing out” every week.
